LSG Sky Chefs opens Europe’s newest, largest catering facility in Frankfurt

Facility to produce up to 77,000 meals for more than 50,000 Lufthansa passengers per day

Neu-Isenburg – With the official opening of the catering facility in the new “Gateway Gardens” complex adjacent to Frankfurt Airport, LSG Sky Chefs now possesses the biggest and most modern plant of this kind in Europe.

The building, built in less than two years, replaces LSG Sky Chefs’ original catering facility built in 1959 on airport premises, which now has to make way for the new terminal extension. The facility completes LSG Sky Chefs’ presence at Frankfurt Airport, which consists of one additional unit on the east side of the airport grounds, where roughly 1,500 employees service about 50 international airlines.

Inside the impressive new building with a 28,000 square-meter production area equipped with the latest technology, 2,400 employees provide up to 77,000 meals for more than 50,000 Lufthansa passengers per day. “Having developed this investment into an industry-leading logistics center makes us very proud,” said Walter Gehl, CEO of LSG Lufthansa Service Holding AG/LSG Sky Chefs, during the inauguration.

The building has exclusive rights to use a tunnel that gives it direct access to the airport premises. Inside the facility, a 1.6 km long two-story electric conveyor system connects all areas and enables automatic transportation of the trolleys. Other new features include the largest dishwash system in Europe with 11 lanes and 116 cooling devices for long-distance flights. The new facility represents an investment of approximately 176 million Euros.
